It is told that Ambe Maa took the form of kali when She herself had to go to kill the demon Mahisasur. She got very angry on the cowardice of Men and started performing tandava. She then started killing all the demons but in the process her anger would also destroy the heavens and earth.
She wore a necklace of the heads of demons and when she was about to put her last leg to destroy the earth Lord Shankar slept in her way and took the force on his chest.
When She realised that she stepped upon her husband She cooled down and took out her tongue.
